As I work on my second cookbook, which centers on healthy comfort food, I've been reflecting on: what is comfort food?

Sometimes we immediately think of pasta, mashed potatoes and pizza. But let’s also think about… flavor! How do we increase flavor?

Of course, we want to sit down and enjoy what we’re eating.

Eating can be such an enjoyable, pleasurable experience. But what about the extended sense of pleasure, of being finished with eating and having our energy steadily and joyfully last the whole day?

Nourishing foods help us fill our cup. Which translates into how we enjoy being with our loved ones, having a clear head, being able to exercise, experience a steady mood. These are all things we don’t always connect to food, yet, there is certainly a connection!

It can sound very cliche to say, ‘We are what we eat,’ but it’s true. What we ingest gives us a comfortable lifestyle. The idea of healthy comfort food IS about sitting down to eat delicious food that’s pleasurable to our palates.

But we can also extend that pleasurable experience into creating a nourishing lifestyle that gives back to us in the long-run.
